What does CPR stand for?
C.P.R is short for cardio pulmonary resuscitation and is performed on people who have suffered a cardiac arrest. This consists of chest compressions to pump blood and more importantly oxygen to the vital organs such as the brain and is needed in all cardiac arrest victims. Rescue breaths can also be delivered if those undertaking this are prepared to do so. Resuscitation aids such as pocket masks or face shields found in first aid kits are advised to reduce risk of infection.
Does CPR start the heart?
No. CPR buys time until other interventions can be delivered such as defibrillation. It does however always have to continue during cardiac arrest as delays in delivering CPR can result in brain damage. This can result in neurological deficit should a (ROSC) return of spontaneous circulation be achieved hence the importance of early CPR.
Can I break ribs when performing CPR?
Yes. However, if your hand positioning is correct the bone that could break is the sternum (breastbone) as ribs are normally only broke when the hands are positioned over ribs which is the wrong hand position. Fear of breaking ribs shouldn’t prevent CPR being administered as the benefits outweigh the risk and anyone in cardiac arrest needs CPR.
What is agonal breathing, I’ve heard about this but don’t understand how you can be in cardiac arrest and still breathing?
Agonal breathing is present in approximately 40% of cardiac arrest victims. This is a breathing pattern often described as “a fish out of water” and is a brainstem reflex to a lack of oxygen. If in doubt begin CPR and attach an A.E.D as soon as possible.
